The Mamas & The Papas werden gevormd door man en vrouw John en Michelle Phillips, voorheen van The New Journeymen, en Denny Doherty, voorheen van The Mugwumps. Het laatste lid dat erbij kwam was Cass Elliot, Doherty's bandgenoot in The Mugwumps. De groep overwoog zichzelf The Magic Cyrcle te noemen voordat ze overschakelden naar The Mamas and the Papas, blijkbaar geïnspireerd door de Hells Angels, wier vrouwelijke medewerkers "mamas" werden genoemd.
